3 Recipes To Make Homemade Fly Spray For Horses

House flies, deer flies, and stable flies may bother your horses, creating lousy noise and biting your horses badly.

How to deal with them?

Instead of using fly masks for horses, there is still another solution – a house fly spray!

Let’s learn three easy but effective homemade recipes to make the horse fly spray.

Homemade Fly Spray For Horses

Recipe #1: The Semi-homemade fly spray

The first recipe on the list is a mixture of natural ingredients and a store-bought fly spray. It’s easy to make and budget-friendly.

What to prepare:

Measure each ingredient in the ratio of 1:1

How to make:

Gather all the ingredients and put them in a spray bottle. Shake well before every use.

The results

Although houseflies still landed on the horse, the bites enormously decreased. This mixture also helps keep deer flies from biting the horses, but it falls behind our expectations.

This semi-homemade fly spray lasted about an hour, perhaps a little less, which is equal to the time the commercial fly spray lasted.

Pros vs. Cons

Pros Cons
●      Simple ingredients

●      Easy to make the recipe

●      Less inexpensive solution than commercial fly sprays

●      Have a slight effect on fly protection

Recipe #2: Apple Cider Vinegar

What to prepare

  • Water
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • A few teaspoons of dawn dish soap

How to make

Mix the ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake well before every use. You can spray on horses and livestock as needed. Please be careful to avoid the eyes and nose. We recommend you store the mixture in a cool, dark place.

The results

I find that this spray works just as well as the Pyranha and Bronco fly sprays, and it is a lot cheaper!

Another advantage of this recipe is that you can add sunscreen to protect your horse from the sun.

However, this spray can’t last long for horses, and the flies can come back after 30 minutes.

Pros vs. Cons

Pros Cons
●      Easy-to-mix ingredients

●      Convenient to make

●      Have a slight effect on fly protection

●      It lasts only 30 minutes

Recipe #3: Eucalyptus essential oil & White Vinegar

What to prepare

  • 2 cups of white vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon of Eucalyptus oil
  • 1 cup of water

How to make

Mix the ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake well before every use.

The results

The most outstanding point of this recipe is that it works well for stable flies and house flies and can even work better than some commercial fly sprays we’ve tested. It’s not perfect, though. These flies still landed on the horses, but the bites the horses experienced were fewer.

On the other hand, this fly spray seemed to be of little or no help in deer flies, which kept biting the horses constantly in large numbers.

Forty-five minutes or up to an hour is the amount of time this spray lasts. However, it did work well for the house and stable flies during that time.

Pros vs. Cons

Pros Cons
●      Natural and easy-to-make ingredients

●      Less inexpensive than commercial fly sprays

●      No effects on deer flies
